- Installation of a new machine
- set a superuser password
- disable all shipped accounts (lp, guest, etc)
- enter machine name in /etc/sys_id
- enter machine name and ip number in /etc/hosts
- create /etc/resolv.conf
- domain bmsc.washington.edu
- nameserver 128.95.235.21
- hostresorder local bind
- create /etc/config/ifconfig-1.options
- netmask 0xffffff00
- broadcast 128.95.235.255
- check the network connection with the ping command
- install dials
- load NFS, C, FORTRAN (Varsity disk) and BSDLPR (OS disk)
look for: compiler_dev, ftn_dev, c_dev, dev.hdr, dev.hdr.lib, nfs
- ftp the /etc/printcap file from another SGI and create the necessary
directories in the /usr/spool directory
- add local hosts to /etc/hosts (necessary for export command)
- create /etc/exports
- increase swap space (use tools under sysadm)
- reboot: NFS should now work
- When the network is down
- call campus network folks at 3-5128
- When print queues are stalled ...
- cd /usr/spool
- ls *
the stalled jobs are visible in directories lpd, lpd1, lpd2, etc.
- /etc/init.d/bsdlpr stop
- /etc/init.d/bsdlpr start
- When the objectserver is not responding
- /etc/init.d/cadmin stop
- /etc/init.d/cadmin clean
- /etc/init.d/cadmin start
- Replacing a system disk
- print the current diskheader info: prtvtoc
- make a system backup: use Backup & Restore from the Desk toolchest
- for backup on a remote drive: enable the guest account on the remote
machine
- check the system backup: bru -t
- replace the disk
- use the recover option of the maintenance menu and follow the instructions
- make a filesystem: you might like to use the prtvtoc info you printed
before
- if you use a remote drive to load the backup: enable tftp as follows
- in /etc/inetd.conf: remove "-s /usr/local/boot ..." from
the tftpd entry
- read the system backup (if remote, use /dev/tape as driver)
- reboot
- restore the original tftp line in /etc/inetd.conf
- disable the guest account
